It’s been a long time between posts lately, because much of my creative energy has been channeled into food. It’s been delicious.
My gym is doing a 60 day Paleo* challenge, which has got me reading lots of food blogs and cooking like a mo’ fo. Perhaps some day I’ll actually be an accomplished enough cook to post recipes, but alas, that time is not now. First, I’d need to get into the habit of actually measuring what I’m doing. I’m pretty sure people would not appreciate “add however much spinach is in your fridge, then add paprika until it looks good”.
I cook like I quilt, but with quilting you can reverse engineer patterns (which, ahem, might be how I write mine…). I look through the recipes/patterns similar to what I’m going for to get a feel for what they did, and then I wing it. At a couple points along the way, I stop and squint at my work, throw in a whole lot of cinnamon, and keep on going.
I got an S- (less than satisfactory) in kindergarten for following directions.

I feel that the backlighting and low angle perfectly express the awesomeness that I expect to unleash from these jars.
Those jars are my current food project. As all Americans know, the 12th president of the United States, Zachary Taylor, died due to eating copious amounts of cherries and milk to keep cool (unless, of course, he was really poisoned). So, what better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than by inventing a cherry & milk drink to name in his honor?
Each jar contains bing cherries soaked in a different liquor – rum, spiced rum, vodka and brandy. And then there’s a bonus jar of rum soaked cherries and blueberries, because adding in blue makes it more ‘Merican. May the tastiest booze win, so that it can be mixed with cream and enjoyed with enthusiasm. Delicious, non-paleo enthusiasm.
I should have some quilt patterns coming soon. I have three tops just waiting to be finished.
* What is Paleo, you ask? Fundamentally – high quality fats and proteins. No added sugar, grains, legumes (including peanuts!), dairy, and fruit in moderation. This is based off the idea that the concept of a calorie being a calorie is misguided, and what is more important is how our body digests. Quality fat and protein are great. Sugars and carbs cause your blood sugar levels to get all out of wack, confuse your body and store fat. Plus, as I’m learning, they are the reason I become the Hulk when I’m hungry and are making me want to eat more And there’s a bunch of stuff about inflammation that I don’t really understand, but that’s why legumes and dairy are out. Whatevs. Who sits around and goes “man, I could really go for some black beans right now”? No one, that’s who. Also, there’s a bunch of garbage about how cave men ate, which I think is designed to sell books and cause internet fights. Success.
Or, if that’s too tricky, just cook everything on paleomg.com with gusto.
